Hungerford's Victorian Extravaganza is Friday 11 December 2026 from 5pm, free, with the parade at 7.30pm. Road closures, free car parks and the running order.
Hungerford’s Victorian Extravaganza is on Friday 11 December 2026. The High Street fills with stalls, steam engines and fairground rides from 5pm, and the parade sets off at 7.30pm. Entry is free. This is the 34th year.
The date is on the organisers’ own Extravaganza page on Visit Hungerford, read on 26 October 2026. Until this month that page still led on the 2025 event, so if a search result shows you Friday 12 December, that was last year.
The quick answer
- When: Friday 11 December 2026, from 5pm. Parade at 7.30pm.
- Where: Hungerford High Street.
- Cost: free. “Tradition should be shared, not ticketed,” the organisers say.
- What’s on: stalls, steam engines, a big wheel and fairground rides, Santa’s Grotto, Dancer and Prancer “clip-clopping past shopfronts”, a farmyard nativity, late-night shopping and the Christmas lights.
- Organised by: Hungerford Chamber of Commerce, backed by Greenham Trust, Hungerford Town Council and local businesses.
- Lights switch-on: a separate evening, Sunday 29 November, at 5pm.
What happens on the night
The 2026 announcement lists the street fair from 5pm: stalls, steam engines, “the whoosh of a big wheel” and fairground rides, Santa’s Grotto, Dancer and Prancer, and a farmyard nativity. Shops stay open late; the organisers single out the Hungerford Arcade and the children’s section of Hungerford Bookshop, which promises mince pies.
At 7.30pm the Extravaganza Parade steps off. The 2026 page names the Reading Scottish Pipe Band, Rock Choir and the Community of Hungerford Theatre Group, with lanterns, “and much more besides”.
The running order
The organisers keep a separate visitor information page with timings, closures and parking. It carries no year, so treat it as the pattern, not a promise for 2026; we will update this page if it changes. It gives:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 5pm | Extravaganza starts: funfair, street food and stalls open |
| 6pm | Victorian costume judging on the Town Hall steps |
| 6.30pm | Hungerford Rock Choir, first half-hour set |
| 7.30pm | Parade from The Bear on Charnham Street to the top of the High Street |
| 8pm | Hungerford Rock Choir, second half-hour set |
The parade entrants it lists are the Reading Scottish Pipe Band, Santa’s Grotto, the Rock Choir, steam engines, street entertainers, Father Christmas, the nativity scene, Stephen Hills Funfair, a town parade and charity stalls.
Road closures
From the same visitor page:
- Everland Road (into Tesco) and Church Street are closed from 3pm to 9pm. After 3pm, Tesco’s car park is reached from Station Road, just over the level crossing.
- Charnham Street, Bridge Street and the High Street close for the parade only, from about 7.30pm to 8pm.
Anything live on the A4 and the approaches is on Newbury roadworks and travel.
Parking
The organisers point visitors to free car parks about a 10-minute walk from the High Street:
- Herongate Club, Herongate, Charnham Park, RG17 0YU
- Berkshire Labels, Swangate, RG17 0YX
- Keyloop, 1 Cygnet Way, Charnham Park, RG17 0YL
- Tesco, Everland Road, RG17 0DX, two hours only, which is also where the disabled parking is
The pay and display car park is on Station Road. Toilets are at Hungerford Library and in Tesco’s car park. For Newbury’s own car parks, see parking in Newbury.
Hungerford lights switch-on, Sunday 29 November
The town’s Christmas lights go on two weeks earlier. The switch-on page says the switch-on is on Sunday 29 November 2026, with “a programme of festive entertainment” from 4pm and the lights on at 5pm from the Town Hall steps, featuring Hungerford Town Band and the Hungerford Primary School Choir. It is free. The organisers call the Hungerford lights “widely regarded as the South’s best”.
Ignore the 2021 page
The Chamber of Commerce’s own old events entry still reads as current and promises “the 27th Hungerford Victorian Extravaganza on Friday 10 December”, with fireworks from Canal Bridge at 8.30pm. It is dated Friday, December 10, 2021. The 2026 page does not mention fireworks.
Stalls and sponsorship
Local charities wanting a stall are asked to contact the Chamber at membership@hungerfordchamberofcommerce.co.uk. The event is paid for by local businesses and grants, and sponsorship given through the Chamber’s Good Exchange page is matched by Greenham Trust.
