Newtown Road tip opens 11am to 6pm on weekdays and 9am to 6pm at weekends. You need a permit and a booked slot, released two weeks ahead. Christmas closures here.

Newbury’s tip at Newtown Road opens 11am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 6pm at weekends and on bank holidays. You cannot just turn up: West Berkshire residents need a free permit and a booked appointment, and slots are released two weeks ahead. Padworth, the district’s other tip, keeps the same hours.

Sources: the council’s Newtown Road and Padworth pages, checked on 24 September 2026. If one site has no slots, the council suggests trying the other.

Neither site lets you in on foot, in a vehicle without a valid permit, or with trade or business waste.

Permit, then booking

  1. Get a permit. For a car it is free and online. Vans and pick-ups need a separate commercial type vehicle permit.
  2. Book a slot. Enter the registration of the car you will use. The council emails a confirmation; take it with you, printed or on your phone (West Berkshire Council).
  3. To cancel or change, use the link in that confirmation email. If you have lost it, call customer services.

Hire van? Book as normal, entering HIRE VAN as the registration, and fill in a household waste declaration before each visit. Bring proof you live in West Berkshire, such as a council tax or utility bill, plus photo ID. This temporary one-day pass covers up to six visits in 12 months, and box vans, tippers, vans over 3 tonnes and vehicles with a tail lift are not allowed (West Berkshire Council).

Not a West Berkshire resident? You can use either tip, in a car only, for a charge on arrival. The council’s non-residents page says £10.50 per visit; its appointments page still says £10. Budget for £10.50. Non-residents cannot bring asbestos.

What costs money

Most household waste is free. Rubble, soil, ceramics and plasterboard are free up to four 25-litre bags, or one piece no bigger than 2000mm by 750mm by 700mm, for up to four visits in four weeks. Above that you pay by volume (West Berkshire Council):

Load Rubble and ceramics Plasterboard Soil
Per extra 25-litre bag £4.20 £3.20 £4.20
Car or hatchback, full £19.00 £17.90 £19.00
Trailer £32.00 £29.40 £32.00
Small van or estate £38.00 £34.60 £38.00
Transit van £124.00 £112.40 £124.00

A part load is charged pro rata, at the staff’s judgement. Tyres cost £7.40 to £15.80 each depending on size and whether they are on the rim. Gas canisters are free. Payment is by card only, and American Express is not accepted.

Christmas at the tip

The council says both centres are closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. This year those are Friday 25 December, Saturday 26 December and Friday 1 January 2027.

One thing is not yet clear. Boxing Day’s bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December in 2026 (GOV.UK). The council’s rule opens the tips 9am to 6pm on bank holidays and closes them on Boxing Day, and it has not said which applies to the substitute Monday. Check the booking system before you go that day.

Last Christmas the council put dedicated wrapping paper bins at both recycling centres, and it takes real Christmas trees from anyone with a booked slot (West Berkshire Council, December 2025). If you pay for garden waste collection, your tree can go at the kerb in January instead: see Newbury Christmas bin collections.

Slots between Christmas and New Year go fast because they are only released two weeks ahead. For a visit on 27 to 31 December, look from about 13 December.

Still to be confirmed

  • Whether the tips open on the substitute bank holiday, Monday 28 December 2026, and any shorter hours on Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve. The council has not published festive hours for 2026; last year’s festive page was live by 15 December.
