Disabled children and their siblings from Thatcham charity Swings & Smiles led the Kingfishers out against Hilltop FC, and Thatcham Town won 4-2.

Children and young people with special needs and disabilities, and their brothers and sisters, walked Thatcham Town FC’s first team out as mascots for the club’s Combined Counties League Premier Division North match against Hilltop FC. The Kingfishers won 4-2.

The families are supported by Swings & Smiles, the Thatcham charity on Lower Way that runs inclusive play sessions, respite care and emotional support for disabled children and their families. The charity says the mascot day is part of a growing partnership with the club, meant to raise awareness of its work and to let local families enjoy football in a welcoming setting.

What the mascots did

According to the charity, the children were given new Thatcham Town shirts, had their photos taken in the tunnel, met both teams and led the players onto the pitch. They took part in half-time activities and lined up for high fives with the players at full time.

The families were welcomed by players, club officials, volunteers and supporters, the charity said. The Mayor of Thatcham, Cllr Mark Lillycrop, the Mayoress, Cllr Jenny Lillycrop, and the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Petra Pemberton, joined them on the day. Swings & Smiles describes all three as long-time supporters.

What the charity said

Becky Smith, Children’s Development Lead at Swings & Smiles, was with the families at the ground. She said:

“Days like these are about so much more than football. They’re about belonging, inclusion and ensuring every child and family feels welcomed and valued within their community. The warmth shown by everyone at Thatcham Town FC was incredible and made the experience truly special.”

Rhonda Nicklin, the charity’s chief executive, said:

“We’re proud of this partnership, which helps raise awareness and support for Swings & Smiles while giving children, siblings and families the chance to enjoy football in their hometown, surrounded by people who welcome and celebrate them.”

The charity thanked Nigel Manley and everyone at Thatcham Town FC for making the day happen.
